Completing the training program is the education. Passing the test is the certification.
The Advanced Driver Written Knowledge Test is the formal assessment for drivers who have completed the Advanced Driver Training Program — Version 2. It tests not just whether the driver read the material but whether they understood the physics, the engineering, and the judgment behind it well enough to apply it in the field — on a real call, under real conditions, with real consequences.
Eighty points. Five sections. A mix of multiple choice and short answer. Minimum passing score 80%.
What it covers:
Section 1 — Load Securement ScienceWorking load limit calculations, angle efficiency loss at specific degrees from horizontal, strap and chain remove-from-service criteria, chain grade identification, and a short answer scenario requiring the driver to correctly identify an attachment point problem and describe the right resolution. These are not definition questions — they require the driver to apply the numbers to a real situation.
Section 2 — Weight Transfer MechanicsThe correct load direction on a flatbed and why. How braking weight transfer is amplified by a towed vehicle on a downhill grade. Tongue weight percentage and what it means for stability. Axle weight verification method. And a short answer question on the 60/40 rule — what it is, how it is applied, and what happens when a driver consistently loads vehicles too far back on the deck.
Section 3 — Rigging Principles and Recovery ForcesSling angle tension calculations at 120 degrees with a real load weight. Extraction force multipliers by surface condition — specifically deep clay mud. Snatch block mechanics and what doubled pull force does to the anchor point. Bystander positioning relative to a tensioned cable. And a short answer question on the snap-back zone — defining it, explaining the cause, and describing two specific preventive measures a driver takes before a recovery begins.
Section 4 — Vehicle Construction and EV ProtocolA Jeep Wrangler in active 4WD mode — correct towing method. A post-collision EV with no visible external damage — what the driver must consider before towing. High-voltage cable colour identification. A unibody vehicle with no accessible manufacturer tow hooks — correct attachment solution. And a short answer question requiring the driver to explain the difference between unibody and body-on-frame construction and what each means for attachment point selection on a tow.
Section 5 — Risk Assessment and Equipment LimitationsThe STOP framework — all four elements, in order. Winch capacity at various drum layers and what it means for a short-distance pull with most cable on the drum. A downed power line at the scene — correct treatment. Boom capacity at partial extension versus zero extension. And a short answer scenario where the scene cannot be made safe — unstable ground, no anchor, live power line — requiring the driver to describe the correct decision, the documentation, and why refusing to proceed is the professional response, not a failure.
How it works:
The test is administered by a supervisor or operations manager — not self-administered. The candidate works independently without access to the training program or any reference material. Allow 60 minutes.
Multiple choice questions are worth 2 points each. Short answer questions are worth 4 points each. Each section is worth 16 points. Any section scoring below 70% requires retraining and retesting in that specific section before the driver is cleared.
The completed and scored test goes in the driver's personnel file permanently. A comprehensive answer key with grading notes for every short answer question is available separately for supervisor use — it is not distributed to test takers.
What this document gives you:
A defensible record that the driver was trained to an advanced technical standard and assessed against it. A driver who has passed this test has demonstrated they understand not just what the procedures are but why they exist — the physics behind load securement, the mechanics behind weight transfer, the forces behind recovery operations.
That understanding is what makes the difference between a driver who follows a procedure and one who makes the right call when the procedure does not cover the situation in front of them.
That record is not just good HR practice. It is the foundation of a professional towing operation.
